2 AM and I’m still awake, writing a song. If I get it all down on paper it’s no longer inside of me threatening the life it belongs to. — Anna Nalick, Breathe (2am)

I've often thought about the quiet that can pass between two who are good friends. There is the awkward silence quiet, the kind where there's something hanging in the air between the two, and it's unresolved and both are somewhat afraid of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, and so both reserve speech, perpetuating the quiet and isolating themselves further from each other.

Then there's the other kind of quiet, the good quiet. The kind of quiet that comes when you know you can be comfortable in the presence of another without having to speak. The kind of quiet that reminds you that the other person can still know you even in your silence, can still care and, in a sense, read into your quiet to see what else is going on.

So whether the quiet lasts long, or ends quickly, I'll be here listening.

Caesalpinia,

...I think that one of the best uses of the word basilica can be seen on sign of the Baltimore Basilica. I drive by it most days and someday will stop for a visit when the sun is up.

...baggy jeans and hoodies....i think that is the unspoken uniform here.

...I've seen those faces unsmiling too

...loving each other = something to do and something to live for

It is great to hear you are visiting...the city will feel bright, I'm sure, while you are here.

I've been in Baltimore for 24 hours and I've seen...

...a big old basilica where religious people come to worship their great God

...a lot of guys my age in baggy jeans and hoodies with an almost wasted expression on their faces

...girls that can't look into the guys' faces

...groups of black folk waiting at the bus stop, not smiling and not talking

...a great homemade pizza place in little Italy

Those are the colors I've seen. I want to move here and but one of the boarded-up brick buildings and give people something to do and to live for and help them love each other. There are churches on every block but the city seems to be dying both spiritually and culturally. That's my initial impression anyway.

Father please send your love to the people of Baltimore and end the long winter...
